Tomatillo-Habanero Hot Sauce

A Hot Sauce For The Rest Of Us

I'll be the first to admit "spicy" isn't always easy on the tastebuds. A spicy heat gives your senses a workout and might even make you break a sweat, if you're lucky. But for me a true Texas hot sauce is like a fiery series of jumping jacks for the tongue; it pushes the outer limits of fervent flavor! Such is this hot sauce, which is not for the faint of heart. Originally shared by our friend and neighbor "Marian", who is a Mexico City native, I quickly snuck the recipe away from her and now we share it with you - it's that good! This hot sauce has graced our kitchen delicacies atop hamburgers, loaded french fries, cheesy nachos, tacos and pretty much everything in between. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do!

Foodie Tip:

  • If you find your first batch is a bit too wild and wicked for your preference you can dial down the heat by adding in some Crema Mexicana, more avocado or Marian said some folks add some chopped zucchini before blending.

  • If you're observing a low carb diet the whole shebang is about 30 carbs which when divided up into spoonfuls is like a tiny drop in the bucket of carbs of daily living.

Time To Prepare: About 30 minutes.

Ingredients:

½ White Onion, Peeled and Cut Into 8 Pieces 10 Tomatillos, Peeled, Stems Removed, Rinsed and Cut Into Chunks 6 Habanero Peppers, Rinsed and Quartered (seeds 'n all!) 4-5 Garlic Cloves, Peeled and Minced A Dash Kosher Salt 1 Avocado, Pitted and Peeled To Serve Your Favorites (Loaded Nachos, Burgers, French Fries, etc.)

What To Do:

1. Place all ingredients except the avocado in a pot. Add water to cover and then bring to a boil over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes. 2. Drain the water. Transfer the vegetables into a blender or if you have an immersion blender you can use the same pot.

3. Blend well.

4. The hot sauce will likely still be warm enough to serve or you can let it cool then store it in a squeeze bottle to enjoy later. Store extra sauce in the refrigerator for a few days. Enjoy!
